Our Heritage

The roots of Kumaun University trace back to two historic government colleges that had long served as beacons of education in the hills of Uttarakhand. In 1973, these institutions were brought together to form a full-fledged university dedicated to the educational aspirations of the Kumaun region.

Notification No. (10)/8651/15/75(85)/64 dated 23 November 1973 formally established the university under Act No. 10 of the State Legislature. In 1994, the constituent colleges — DSB, Nainital and SSJ, Almora — were elevated to the status of University Campuses, marking a defining moment in the university's growth.

Today, the university continues to honour this heritage while embracing the National Education Policy 2020, interdisciplinary research and modern pedagogy.
